From years of consultation experience, we have encountered numerous students who returned home immediately after graduation without applying for a 485 visa, only to later wish to go back to Australia to work, gain professional experience or pursue migration pathways. Regrettably, once they miss the 485 application window, they rarely get an equivalent second chance. Some assume they can simply apply for a tourist visa to re-enter Australia and lodge a 485 application later. In practice, however, the tourist visa itself becomes the biggest hurdle. Recent graduates who clearly meet all 485 eligibility criteria yet submit a tourist visa application from overseas face heavy scrutiny from case officers, who will readily question their genuine travel intentions—this introduces significant visa uncertainty. Viewed in this light, the 485 application fee buys far more than just a visa; it secures the option to remain in Australia for several years to work, build career experience and map out long-term plans. Hardly anyone regrets applying for a 485 visa, yet countless people lament skipping it after graduation.

Eight Common Pitfalls to Avoid When Applying for the 485 Visa
1. Graduation ceremony date does not start your application window
Only the date printed on your Course Completion Letter marks the opening of your 485 application eligibility window.
2. Application must be lodged within 6 months of your Completion Letter issue date
Failure to submit within this 6-month window results in permanent loss of eligibility for the 485 visa.
3. Student OSHC is not acceptable for a 485 application
OSHC covers holders of student visas only.
You must hold valid OVHC once you lodge your 485; student health cover cannot replace it.
4. Do not delay applying for your Chinese Police Clearance until after graduation
Notarisation and certified translation can take 4–8 weeks in many Chinese cities. Start this process before finishing your studies.
5. An AFP National Police Check is a mandatory requirement
You will generally need both an AFP check and a Chinese police clearance certificate. You cannot lodge your visa application on the same day you receive your AFP results.
6. English test results must remain valid at lodgement
Accepted tests:
- PTE Academic
- IELTS Academic/General
- TOEFL iBT
All test scores must be issued no earlier than 12 months before you submit your visa application.
7. Avoid travelling overseas immediately after lodgement
If you plan to depart Australia post-lodgement, first confirm your Bridging Visa conditions and whether a Bridging Visa B (BVB) is required to secure re-entry rights.
8. 485The 485 visa is a stepping stone, not your final destination
Once granted, start planning your next migration pathway without delay:
- Professional skills assessment
- 189
- 190
- 491
- Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage employer-sponsored visa
- Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme permanent visa
Do not leave your migration planning until your 485 visa is nearing expiry.
