For those unfamiliar with PhD visa renewals, this experience might easily make you think the system was broken, documents were lost, or even cause serious self-doubt. Hopefully, this will help current or future PhD students, especially those renewing together with their spouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">I. Client Background: PhD Visa Renewal + Spouse Included<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Primary applicant: PhD student<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Secondary applicant: Spouse (dependent)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Visa type: Subclass 500 Student Visa (Higher Degree by Research)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Situation: The client had already submitted their PhD thesis and was waiting for final examination results. The existing visa was approaching expiry, so a renewal was required to cover the remaining post-submission period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Key point:\nDuring this renewal, no additional visa application fee was requested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">II. The Most Surprising Part: System Displayed \u201cAUD 0\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Primary applicant: AUD 0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dependent spouse: AUD 0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Total cost: AUD 0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Under certain circumstances, PhD student visa renewals may indeed require no additional fee, particularly when:\n\nRenewing from the same visa subclass to the same subclass\uff0c\n\nNo new CoE is issued\uff0c\n\nThe academic pathway is continuous and uninterrupted\uff0c\n\nSeeing AUD 0 in the system is possible \u2014 and not necessarily a system error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>III. Bridging Visa Applied Manually \u2014 but \u201cNothing Happened\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the original visa was close to expiry, we proceeded very cautiously:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0Student visa application already lodged<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prior study timeline affected by COVID-related delays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Applicant physically in Australia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dependent spouse included<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0<strong>In theory, a Bridging Visa A (BVA) should be granted automatically<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>To be safe, we manually applied for the BVA.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0No update in ImmiAccount<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0No email notification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0System status completely unchanged<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The manually applied BVA also did not appear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">And yet \u2014 nothing negative happened either:\n\nNo refusal\uff0c\n\nNo request for further information\uff0c\n\nNo warning\uff0c\n\nJust\u2026 silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">IV. The Turning Point: Medical Completed \u2192 Visa Granted Immediately\n\nThere was only one real trigger point in the entire process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">\ud83d\udc49 Completion of the health examination<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Once the medical was done \u2014 on the same day or shortly thereafter \u2014\nthe visa was granted directly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No additional documents requested<br>No further questions<br>No \u201cunder further assessment\u201d status\uff0c\n\nJust a straight approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>V. Key Takeaways for PhD Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">1. Bridging Visas Don\u2019t Always Provide Immediate Feedback<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The system applies coverage automatically<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The case waits for a key requirement (such as medicals)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">No update \u2260 something is wrong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t let the silence panic you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. <\/strong><strong>3. Medical Examination Is Often the Final Trigger<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For PhD student visas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The medical is frequently the
