With six months remaining on your visa, it may sound like there is plenty of time. However, if your next step involves securing an employer, verifying work experience, preparing English proficiency or a skills assessment, and compiling documents for employer sponsorship and nomination, those six months will pass quickly. New rules which took effect on 2 October impose greater restrictions on onshore applications for further student visas. Your next move starts with clarifying your current visa status.
If you currently hold a student visa, first check whether you qualify for an exception to lodge another student visa onshore. Eligible course upgrades, completion of your principal course, provider default, PhD or primary/secondary study, and other scenarios may still allow onshore applications. For instance, upgrading to a qualifying master’s degree after finishing undergraduate studies may fall under the course upgrade exception. You still need to verify requirements around the principal course, AQF level, number of courses and education provider. A new CoE alone does not automatically grant eligibility for an onshore lodgement. If you hold a 485 visa, including a 485 dependent visa holder, you cannot treat switching to a 500 student visa onshore as a backup option. Current restrictions apply to 485 holders. Anyone wishing to continue studying must separately assess eligibility for offshore lodgement and grant; you cannot rely on switching to a primary student visa applicant to bypass these limits. For graduates already in the workforce who wish to keep working in Australia, employer sponsorship is a pathway worth evaluating well in advance. Using the common 482 Skills in Demand visa Core Skills stream as an example, below is a backward-planned preparation timeline for your final six months.
Six months remaining: Verify your foundational eligibility。
Check whether your actual job duties align with a suitable nominated occupation, then review your qualifications, skills, English requirement and whether a skills assessment is needed. Work experience calculation requires early attention: this stream generally requires at least one year of cumulative work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field within the five years before application, or equivalent part‑time or casual experience. It is not enough to simply have “one year of employment”; the focus is on job content and verifiable practical experience. This is the time to discuss long‑term staffing needs with your current employer. If you plan to change jobs, target opportunities that match your genuine experience and career direction.
Three to four months remaining: Turn the employer’s intention into a workable application plan。
An employer saying they “are willing to sponsor” is only the starting point. Next steps include assessing the sponsor’s eligibility, genuine position requirement, business viability and capacity to pay, employment contract and salary arrangements. Remuneration must meet the applicable income threshold and market rate obligations; a figure agreed verbally between two parties is insufficient. Labour market testing should be scheduled around your projected nomination date. Where LMT applies, recruitment methods, duration and evidence requirements must be satisfied, normally including a minimum four‑week advertising period. Check separately whether any exemption applies. Gather personal documentation in parallel, including employment contracts, payslips, bank salary deposits, tax records and employment references so your work history can be clearly verified.
One to two months remaining: Confirm visa transition and prepare fallback options if criteria are not met。
Do not treat verbal promises from an employer as confirmed visa arrangements. Check whether you can lodge a valid application in time, and how your current visa, bridging visa and work rights will transition. If no viable onshore pathway can be secured before expiry, you may assess the option to depart Australia lawfully, then build qualifying experience, finalise documents and seek sponsorship opportunities offshore. The 482 visa allows eligible applicants to apply from overseas; departing Australia does not automatically close this pathway. Nevertheless, offshore applications still need to satisfy employer, position and personal criteria, and there is no guarantee of return to Australia after departure. Prospects for future permanent residency also require separate assessment.
When six months remain on your 485 visa, the most valuable first step is identifying exactly what you still need to qualify for your next visa. If you are already employed, start by confirming four key pieces of information: visa expiry date, actual job duties, relevant work history, and whether your employer is open to discussing sponsorship. Only once these are confirmed can you build the subsequent timeline.
