After arriving in Australia on a 482 visa, apart from the 186 TRT stream, the 186 Direct Entry (DE) stream is also available.

When most clients inquire about employer-sponsored visas, their first thought is:

"Obtain a 482 visa first, then wait a few years to apply for 186 TRT." This is indeed the most common pathway, yet it is not the only option. In fact, eligible applicants do not have to serve a lengthy employment period after securing a 482 visa — they may be able to apply directly for permanent residency (PR) via the 186 Direct Entry (DE) stream. These two pathways operate on entirely different principles.

The well-known 186 TRT Stream

TRT stands for Temporary Residence Transition. This is essentially a tenure-based pathway: 482 Visa → Meet employment requirements with the same sponsoring employer → Apply for 186 PR via employer nomination.

This route is reliable and mainstream, suitable for the majority of applicants. Its core requirements include:

  • Holding a valid 482 visa and completing the mandatory employment period
  • Remaining employed by the nominating employer on an ongoing basis
  • Complying with relevant position and salary criteria

This is why many people assume the 482 visa is merely a transitional period to "serve time". This is not always the case, however.

The alternative: Direct access to 186 DE Stream

DE refers to Direct Entry, which assesses whether an applicant already meets the PR eligibility criteria. Rather than focusing on how long you have resided in Australia, it evaluates:

  • Cumulative relevant work experience
  • Role matching
  • Relevance of academic qualifications
  • Completion of the required skills assessment
  • Compliance of the nominated position with official requirements

In other words, applicants with extensive overseas work experience or strong professional backgrounds can skip the long transitional phase. A 482 visa simply serves as a travel and work permit for entry into Australia, after which you can swiftly lodge an application for 186 DE.

Ultimately, the key lies in advance planning. Many applicants are not ineligible for PR; they simply choose the wrong pathway from the very start. The TRT stream is a safe choice for many. Meanwhile, applicants who make early arrangements for roles, documentation and employer sponsorship can obtain PR much faster. For individuals entering Australia on a 482 visa, some start planning for PR only after 3 to 4 years, while those with strategic upfront planning complete the process in far less time. The gap all comes down to getting your migration pathway right from the outset.
