Many 485 graduates run into this question: with only one year left on their 485, is it still too late to start preparing for employer sponsorship? If the occupation, employer, work experience, and subsequent nomination requirements are all met, it can actually still be planned: 485 → 482 Skills in Demand Visa → 186 TRT → PR. Today, let's use a concrete example to break down the full timeline. Assume: in August 2026, the applicant still has 1 year left on their 485. The pathway can then roughly be planned as follows.
- August 2026 – Start accumulating relevant work experience
At this point the 485 has about 12 months left. The first thing is not to wait until the 485 is about to expire to look for an employer, but to start accumulating work experience relevant to the future 482 nominated occupation as soon as possible. This is because the current 482 Skills in Demand Visa Core Skills Stream requires applicants to have: at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field. So if counting from August 2026: August 2026 → August 2027. This just completes roughly 1 year of relevant work experience accumulation. During this stage, be especially careful to keep complete work evidence, such as:
- Employment contract
- Payslips
- Superannuation records
- Income statement / tax records
- Position description
- Employment reference
At the same time, the actual work content needs to reasonably correspond to the 482 nominated occupation chosen later.
- August 2027 – Meet the 1-year work experience requirement and prepare for the 482
By August 2027: the 485 is about to expire + roughly 1 year of relevant work experience has been accumulated. If the employer is willing to continue providing sponsorship at this point, and the applicant's occupation, salary, English, work experience, and other conditions all meet the requirements, they can move into the 482 application stage. The basic logic of the current 482 Core Skills Stream includes: the employer meets the sponsorship requirements + the position meets the requirements + the occupation meets the requirements + the salary reaches the relevant standard + the applicant has at least 1 year of relevant work experience + meets individual conditions such as English. Therefore, the more ideal approach is not to wait until the last day of the 485 to start preparing. It is recommended to complete well in advance, a few months ahead: occupation confirmation → employer eligibility confirmation → work experience documents → English → nomination documents → visa documents. Aim to submit the 482 validly before the 485 expires.
- August 2027 – Submit the 482 Skills in Demand Visa application
Once the documents are ready, move into the formal 482 application stage. This usually involves: on the employer side: Sponsorship / Nomination, as well as: on the applicant side: the 482 Visa Application. If the applicant lodges a qualifying 482 application while onshore in Australia and holding a valid 485, they can transition to the relevant Bridging Visa depending on the circumstances. Note: lodging the 482 ≠ the 482 being granted. Actual processing times will vary based on the processing times published by the Department of Home Affairs at the time, the occupation, the employer, and the individual case. So do not simply work backwards from some fixed "3 months", "6 months", or "10 months" figure found online.
- Assume early 2028 – 482 granted
For ease of understanding, let's assume: in early 2028, the 482 is officially granted. From here, the 186 TRT timeline becomes very important. This is because the current 186 Temporary Residence Transition Stream generally requires applicants to have: accumulated at least 2 years of qualifying sponsored employment within the 3 years prior to applying for the 186. Moreover, the relevant work must meet the requirements set out by the Department, including: full-time work, in Australia, and the qualifying sponsored employment must have been undertaken while holding a 457/482 or a qualifying related Bridging Visa. So there is a point here that is particularly easy to misunderstand: the 1 year of work experience accumulated during the 485 is mainly used to satisfy the 482 work experience requirement. It cannot be directly understood as: 1 year of 485 work + 1 year of 482 work = satisfying the 186 TRT two-year requirement. The two years for 186 TRT need to be re-assessed according to its own eligible sponsored employment rules.
- 2028–2030 – Accumulate the work time required for 186 TRT
After the 482 is granted, the applicant continues working for the qualifying sponsoring employer. The core goal from here on is: to accumulate at least 2 years of eligible sponsored employment that meets the 186 TRT requirement. For example: early 2028: 482 granted – early 2029: about 1 year – early 2030: about 2 years. If the work and visa status continue to meet the requirements throughout this period, then around 2030 there is a chance to move into the 186 TRT stage. But note that if anything happens in between, such as: changing employers, changing occupations, long periods away from work, unpaid leave, or changes to visa status, these can all affect the actual countable work time.
So you cannot simply look at "two years" on the calendar; you need to look at how much truly qualifies as eligible sponsored employment under the 186 TRT rules.
- 2030– Prepare for 186 TRT
Once the two-year requirement is met, you can begin assessing 186 TRT. The core conditions for the current 186 TRT include: holding a qualifying 457/482 or related Bridging Visa; accumulating at least 2 years of qualifying eligible sponsored employment within the past 3 years; a nomination by a qualifying Australian employer; generally being under 45 at the time of application unless an exemption applies; meeting Competent English; and meeting other requirements such as health and character. If all conditions are met, you can move into: the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme — Temporary Residence Transition Stream. This is what we commonly call 186 TRT.
- 2030 – Lodge the 186 TRT PR application
186 TRT is a Permanent Visa. The application usually includes: Employer Nomination + the 186 Visa Application. If the application is granted, the applicant officially becomes an Australian Permanent Resident. In addition, for applicants who meet the requirements, they can also apply for Medicare after lodging the permanent visa application, subject to Medicare's specific eligibility requirements — it does not need to be understood as only being possible after the PR is officially granted.

Actual timing will be affected by the processing speed of the 482 and 186, the employer situation, occupation, salary, visa status, and individual documents, so the above timeline is best used as a planning model, not a guarantee of grant timing.
